Something about the Irving College Tigers brings out the best in Bobby Ray.
The Stars defeated Irving College for the third time this season Monday, the latest a 21-9 victory in the opening round of the boys 5-6 grade elementary tournament.
Garryn Duggin scored a game-high eight points and Kendrick Reagan added seven as Bobby Ray punched its ticket into the quarterfinals. The Stars will be back in action Thursday for a 5:15 p.m. matchup with WCMS, the tournament’s top seed.
Bobby Ray used a stifling defense and the one-two punch of Duggin and Reagan to lead Irving College wire-to-wire. The Stars ran out to a 16-1 lead by halftime, holding the Tigers without a field goal for nearly 14 minutes before Matthew Roller got a basket in the third quarter.
Duggin scored five of his points in the second quarter, while Reagan had all of his points by halftime. Keynai Bryan and Luke Muncey added first-quarter layups as the Stars took command. Bryan would finish with four points as he added a breakaway layup in the third quarter.
Roller, who scored the Tigers’ lone point in the first half on a free throw, led Irving College with five points. Hayden Hardy got on the scoreboard with a jumper in the fourth quarter, while Bentley Fults and Trace Taylor hit free throws in the second half.
