Campaign resident and Monterey native Luther Johnson “L.J.” Matheny, 99, was born Jan. 10, 1920 and died April 25 at Raintree Manor following a brief illness.

Retired from Genesco, a United States Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Missionary Baptist Church, he was the son of the late Lozier Lee and Oma Manila Gunter Matheny. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by first wife Alice Blanche Minton Matheny; second wife Drue Elizabeth Pinegar Matheny; two sisters, Mildred Grissom and Anna Kent; brother Paul Matheny; and step-grandson Laryon Blake.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Sid W. and Joyce Matheny of McMinnville; two granddaughters and spouses, Jessica and Davey Ferrell of Smithville, and Felicia and Joey McPeak of Lebanon, two step-grandchildren and spouses, Sandy and Joey Hennessee of Manchester, and Eddie and Anita Rains of Antioch, five great-grandchildren and spouses, Krysta and Jacob Pedigo, Keith and Devan Ferrell, Austyn Walls, Colby Walls, and Levi McPeak; two great-great-grandchildren, Teagan Pedigo and Oaklyn Ferrell; four step-great-grandchildren, Charlie Hennessee, Kyle Rains, Caleb Rains, and Cole Rains; and six step-great-great-grandchildren, Eli Hennessee, Audrey Hennessee, McKenzie Rains, Kaylynn Rains, Ellie Rains, and C.J. Rains.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at High’s Chapel with Jackie Matheny officiating. Burial will follow at Friendship Cemetery with full military honors administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m., and from 12 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at High’s. Online condolences may be made at
