If you want to save nearly 10 percent on clothing, school supplies, or even a new laptop computer, this weekend is the time to shop.Tennessee is having its annual sales tax holiday this Friday through Sunday. The tax-free weekend officially begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 7.With the first day of school less than two weeks away on Aug. 15, this weekend is an opportune time to hit the stores.The state and local option sales tax in McMinnville is 9.75 percent, meaning local shoppers will save nearly $10 for every $100 worth of tax-exempt merchandise they buy.Shoes and clothing that cost less than $100, school and art supplies under $100, and home computers that cost less than $1,500 are among the many items that can be purchased without sales tax. The state reimburses local governments for the lost sales tax revenue.The sales tax holiday traditionally means increased business for local merchants.“We usually do a pretty good business during the tax-free holiday,” said Shoe Sensation assistant manager Patrice Prosser.
