Fans of McMinnville’s Silver and Gold Band can catch them in musical action during at least two public appearances scheduled this month.
The band will be playing this Sunday, Dec. 11, at First Baptist Church at 3 p.m., and Dec. 18 at Three Star Mall at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend both performances.
“They are both Christmas-related programs,” said Ron Young, a saxophone player in the band. “If someone is almost in the Christmas spirit, we are hoping to push them over the edge. We’ll play 12 to 15 songs, and it should take about a hour.”
December is a busy month for the band.
“We try and play seven to eight times a year,” said Young. “During the month of December, we have five performances scheduled.”
Silver and Gold also played at the “It’s A Dr. Seuss Christmas” parade Saturday, and Christmas in the Park on Tuesday. Members will also be participating in the veterans program in the lobby of Regions Bank on Main Street tomorrow at 1 p.m. with patriotic tunes.
The band currently has 35 brass, woodwind and percussion members from the community and surrounding area. It is one of the oldest bands in the state with its beginnings dating back to the 1800s.
Currently under the direction of Mike Chilcutt, retired Warren County Band director, the band performs concerts at community and regional events including patriotic celebrations, festivals and county fairs, in addition to its Christmas programs.
The Silver and Gold Band is supported by Security Federal Savings Bank and from other donations. For details on how to make a donation, individuals can visit the band’s website at www.silverandgoldband.com.
