A mother who was allegedly raising her children in squalor has been charged with child neglect.The mother, Reba M. Prater, 36, of Smartt Station is charged with two counts of child neglect and is set to have her case heard in front of General Sessions Judge Bill Locke on Nov. 3.Sheriff’s investigator Travis Thaxton went to the Prater home to look into physical abuse allegations concerning her 10-year-old son. It was when he was granted permission to look around the house the gravity of the living conditions became clear.“I observed, throughout the house, there was dried feces on the floors,” Thaxton revealed. “In the boy’s bedroom, feces was spread over the walls and floors.”Thaxton said he found the same to be true in a girl’s room where feces was also evident.
