Plans speed up for new parking lot at West

Additional parking in front of West Elementary may become a reality as School Board members have voted unanimously to approve a cost estimate for a plan that will provide 42 parking spaces.West Elementary principal Michelle Lewis proposed the idea of turning the grassy space inside the school’s front circle into parking spots during a School Board meeting in January.“As far as I know, we are the only school with no guest parking,” Lewis told the School Board at that time. The one public entry to West is located near the circle where there is no marked parking. The circle is used for student drop-off and pick-up and is technically a fire lane. Parents who want to make a short visit to the school must either park illegally in the circle, and sometimes cause traffic issues, or they have to park in back and walk all the way around the school.Members were given four options for parking lot layouts. Three of the layouts showed 90-degree parking spots which are more space and cost efficient than diagonal parking spaces.Parking lot layouts presented to the board were:• Layout A – 32 spaces at a diagonal angle.
