A mother was indicted for murder and aggravated child abuse charges on Friday for the death of her infant son in December.
Katy Stark, 34, faces the charges after the Warren County grand jury handed down two indictments against her during its regular monthly session. Stark was arrested at her mother’s home in Grundy County on Friday and booked at Warren County Jail on $250,000 bond.
The 2-month-old child died Dec. 18 at his home at McMinnville Housing Authority on Hamilton Street, which is off Old Morrison Road. The mother’s neglect directly led to the child’s death, the indictment claims, which is how the murder charge is applicable.
“She had a guy over the night before and she did meth and other drugs,” said McMinnville Police investigator Eddie Colwell. “After the male left the residence, she passed out. When she got up to use the bathroom, she found that the child was unresponsive on the couch. The baby died due to her doing drugs.”
The baby was found unresponsive at 12:45 p.m. on Dec. 18. EMS responded and pronounced the boy dead.
Stark initially denied doing meth the night in question, then changed her story and admitted it to investigators. Colwell said blood was drawn from Stark and toxicology reports determined she had a number of drugs in her system. The infant was sent for autopsy.
“She was positive for numerous drugs,” said Colwell. “The baby was left in an unsafe sleeping environment. During the course of our investigation, we’ve learned Ms. Stark is unsure if she rolled over on the baby and suffocated it.”
Stark lived at the home with her two boys.
Stark is expected to be arraigned next week. This is when she is formally presented with the charges against her. During arraignment, she can be assigned an attorney, enter an initial plea, and request lower bond if she’s still in jail.
