A man who threatened his sister with an ax will serve four months in jail and have to undergo a mental evaluation.
The man, John Austin Graham Curtis, 20, had a felony count of aggravated assault reduced to domestic assault and was directed to serve 120 days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence. Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley also directed him to attend batterer intervention along with undergoing a mental evaluation.
The incident which landed Curtis in jail happened just before his 20th birthday in April. His sister, the victim, told police the siblings had been arguing. He had disappeared for a few days following the argument.
On the day of the incident she returned home to her Westside Manor apartment to find her brother there. He left the apartment when she arrived but he left behind a note inside her res-idence, threatening to harm her. He then returned.
“He returned a short time later, holding something behind his back,” said McMinnville policeman Marty Cantrell, noting it didn’t take long for him to reveal what he had hidden. “He pulled out a small ax and made threats toward his sister.”
The balance of his sentence after his jail time will be spent on probation.
