Local man falls to his death in Georgia

A McMinnville man has died during a roofing accident over the weekend in Dalton, Ga.According to the Dalton Daily Citizen, the man fell about 30 feet while working on the roof of a carpet and floor manufacturing plant, Shaw Industries, at 2305 Abutment Road. The accident happened around 9 a.m. Saturday.Authorities have yet to identify the victim other than to say he’s a 48-year-old McMinnville resident who worked for Porter Roofing. A call to Porter Roofing to obtain the victim’s name was not returned.The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating whether any safety standards were violated.Dalton Fire Department Deputy Chief Gary Baggett said the victim was awake at the scene.“They found him conscious but confused and he had severe trauma to his head,” Baggett said.The man was taken to Hamilton Medical Center but went into cardiac arrest and died on the way.Information on exactly how the man fell through the roof and whether he was wearing safety gear has not been provided.OSHA records show Porter Roofing was fined $1,315 in 2011 and $1,750 in 2012 for failure to meet standards for fall protection.
