Just hours after four high school students were killed in a crash on Viola Highway, a fifth Warren County resident lost his life on the same road, this fatality occurring in neighboring Grundy County. The victim, Richard Griffith, 48, was pronounced dead shortly after the wreck.According to the highway patrol report, the fatal crash happened at 11:11 a.m. Sunday, roughly 10 hours after the fatal crash 22 miles away that claimed the life of the four WCHS students. The wreck happened as Griffith was trying to pull from Fire Tower Road, which is located just north of Altamont on Highway 108 in Grundy County. Investigators believe the hilly terrain leading up to the crash site obscured Griffith from seeing the 1999 Nissan pickup driven by Zachary Whitman, 17, of Altamont as it approached.Griffith, who had been sitting at the stop sign on Fire Tower Road waiting to pull onto Highway 108 in his 1999 Chrysler, entered the intersection directly into the path of the teen as his pickup topped the crest of the hill. The impact hit Griffith on the driver side of his vehicle, causing the fatal injuries.
