A woman faces narcotics smuggling charges after she slammed her SUV into a utility pole Thursday night and was arrested at the scene for drunk driving.
The woman, Mary Judkins, is charged with DUI and introduction of drugs into the county jail.
According to Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tommy Myers, Judkins lost control of her vehicle on Crisp Springs Road, within eye shot of Old Nashville Highway near the old Red Dog.
“She veered off the road and hit a pole,” Myers said. “When officers got there, they smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from her.”
Myers said he understands Judkins already has a DUI pending in court. She failed a sobriety test at the scene and was taken into custody. She escaped injury in the crash.
“She was asked if she had any contraband on her,” the chief deputy noted. “She said she did not, but once she got to jail a search revealed 15 alprazolam pills. She had a chance to turn them over before but since she did not, she was charged with introduction of drugs into a penal institution.”
