There are a number of apps available to help you watch your weight.

It’s that time again. USA Gym, along with others in our community, are crammed full of people taking advantage of New Year membership specials. If you’re one of those people, good for you!

It’s an excellent step in the right direction because research proves exercise can make improvements in preventing, managing, and reducing the symptoms of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

Although you may be motivated in part by resolutions of weight loss and healthier living, just remember – you can’t exercise off a lousy diet. As the saying goes, “Get fit in the gym, lose weight in the kitchen.”

There are apps that can help with that. It only takes a couple minutes to download the one you feel works best for you. Here’s a look at some of the top-rated weight loss apps.

MyFitnessPal – This top app comes with a barcode scanner to see what’s hidden in your favorite packaged foods. Built with a food database of more than 6 million foods, food log, and 300+ cardio and strength workouts, you get an overall picture of your health.

Free with in-app purchases.

Foodcate – This app educates users on what makes a nutrition label high or poor quality so they can keep the right types of foods in their pantry and fridge. It also lets you scan the barcode on food labels to get a quick health grade from A to F.

Free with in-app purchases.

HowUDish – This app can help you find healthy food picks at restaurants so you can still meet your weight loss goals, no matter where you decide to dine. You can also rate your dish and the restaurant and share your thoughts with the online community.

Free with in-app purchases.

Noom – This app is part meal-planning, part fitness-tracker and 100 percent motivational life coach. Using psychology-based approaches, the app reveals your weight loss obstacles and provides tips for making better adjustments, making it a great tool for personalized attention.

Free for a 14-day trial period, then the pricing varies depending on what package you pick.
