Viola residents will be offering a Christmas special this Saturday morning featuring Santa Claus.
Christmas in the Park will be offered Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event is organized and presented by citizens, who hope everyone will come out and enjoy themselves free of charge.
Activities are to start at 10 a.m. with the arrival of Santa Claus to visit with children, listen to their Christmas wishes, and allow pictures. Youngsters, and the young at heart, can also partake in yummy goodies, such as hot chocolate, cookies, candy and a chili cook-off.
According to chili cook-off organizer Kevin Deason, contestants do not have to sign up but they do have to show up.
“No sign-ups are needed, show up,” he said. “There will be no electricity available so bring propane or something in order to keep your chili warm. Contestants will be setting up in front of the store.”
Competitors must bring their own table and items for staging. Event organizers will provide cups and spoons for judging the entries.
Judges will be visitors to the event.
“The public votes,” said Deason. “Each person gets one vote. First, second and third places will be awarded. Show off your favorite chili recipe or just enjoy the event, but join us for some holiday fun during Christmas in the Park.”
The park, surrounding buildings and gazebo are decorated with lights and animated characters. Bring a camera to capture your children’s precious moments with Santa Claus or with one of the decorations. Viola activities are family oriented, free and open to the public.
