Using science to mark the past
VU scientists help find unmarked graves
Mud Creek Shiloh (2) copy.jpg
JL Jacobs photos Members of the historic Mud Creek Shiloh Cemetery gathered Sunday for a day of surveying unmarked graves of formerly enslaved persons of the Rock Martin House with Vanderbilt scientists. Kneeling beside the marker are Susan Foote and Carolyn Borum. Second row, from left, are Bryan and Steve Miller, Susan Hall, Ken Miller, Ken Hall, Blaine Foote and Raleigh Miller.
Under calm skies and balmy temperatures, Vanderbilt scientists were able to use new technology to identify where certain graves may be in Mud Creek Shiloh Cemetery. Originally the family plot of Rock Martin, less than a half mile from the 200-year old house, the cemetery has long held unmarked graves suspected to be those of former enslaved persons of the Rock Martin family.
