This year’s McMinnville City Triathlon, set for Sept. 5, has been canceled.

A local multisport race has been canceled for this year.

The McMinnville City Triathlon, originally scheduled for Sept. 5, will not swim, cycle and run its way back through the streets of McMinnville in 2020.

“We have postponed the triathlon until next year,” said Triathlon Committee member Bobby Kirby. “It’s with much regret.”

In March, McMinnville’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved a request from organizers to allow the event. Since it had since 2014, officials offered their support by waiving the rental fee for use of Gilley Pool for the swimming portion and providing traffic control by McMinnville Police Department for the final two legs of the race.

“We’re had so much support from our sponsors, volunteers and athletes, but in the end we felt it was the right thing to do for the health and safety of our athletes, sponsors and community,” said McMinnville Mayor Ben Newman.

This would have been the ninth year for Triathlon Committee members to spearhead the event.
