Tennis courts could be served to public this week

Residents are within days of serving up a game on two newly renovated outdoor tennis courts at McMinnville Civic Center.

Now that a fence has been placed, the final step is topcoat placement and allowing it time to fully cure. 

“Surfacing will be done this week, weather permitting,” said McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department director Scott McCord. “So next week, if all falls into place, the courts will be available for use.” 

Renewed were the two courts closest to the Jungle Jym at a cost of $101,910. Attention now turns to renovating the two remaining courts.

McCord says funding for continued work has not been secured. However, it will be included within his proposed 2019-20 fiscal year budget for city officials to consider. 

“Funding needs to be approved in our budget,” said McCord. “I would think it would not be a problem. We will bid it out and hopefully have it ready to start work in July.”

Fiscal years run July 1 thru June 30. Between now and July 1, 2019, McMinnville officials must review proposed departmental budgets, consider a property tax rate, and approve a consolidated budget for the upcoming year.

A dedication ceremony for The David Dunlap Tennis Complex, named in honor of coach David Dunlap, will be held after the second set of tennis courts has been renovated, says McCord.
