A McMinnville teen succumbed to a gunshot wound Tuesday afternoon at Vanderbilt Medical Center after being airlifted there earlier in the day.
Japeth Gilley, 19, a young father, was identified as the victim by law enforcement officials.
According to Warren County Sheriff’s Department Major Jason Walker, Gilley was inside a vehicle which pulled up to the emergency room at Saint Thomas River Park on Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. Hospital staff helped Gilley inside and the vehicle drove away.
It was during the initial medical examination it was learned Gilley had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. At that point it was determined he be airlifted to Vanderbilt.
“We are following up a number of leads and talking to possible witnesses,” said Walker. “There are a lot of rumors out there about what might have happened.”
The District Attorney’s Office and McMinnville Police Department are assisting in the investigation.
“We know who dropped him off, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions,” said District Attorney General Lisa Zavogiannis. “I can’t say at this time if a crime was committed or if a crime wasn't committed. We are still investigating.”
Zavogiannis said it appears Gilley received the gunshot wound while inside a home, but she would not elaborate on the location of the home or who owns the property.
Walker said Gilley has been sent for autopsy and a medical examiner’s report is expected to provide more information.
