Roads added to speed limit discussion

Changing the speed limit on some roads in Warren County is still commanding the attention of county commissioners.
The county Highway and Bridge Committee has decided to include Henegar and Tenpenny roads with a measure to reduce the speed limit on Smartt Station Road from an unposted 55 mph to a posted 35 mph, as well as reaffirm the speed on Short Mountain Road to be 45 mph.
Road Superintendent Levie Glenn suggested that Henegar and Tenpenny roads need to be reduced to 35 mph with Smartt Station Road.
“After I got to looking at Smart Station, I’m sure the road goes all the way to Old Well Road and I think we need to take Henegar Road and Tenpenny Road, that’s a branch off of Smartt Station. It stops right where Tenpenny and Henegar come together, but Smartt Station has the right of way and keeps going. It’s a curvy road right there. I would recommend we add those two roads to the list because they are continuations.”
Short Mountain Road, a state highway that was posted at 45 mph by the state, will remain 45.
“The traffic engineer rode it and it meets the criteria for 45 mph and putting up some curve signs too,” said Glenn. “It’s a state aid road. I thought, maybe, that we had already passed a resolution in the past. We researched and we haven’t. The state did a safety audit on the road a year or two ago and put up some signs for speed limits and some other things.”
Short Mountain intersects with Green Hill Road (State Highway 287) and extends into Cannon County. Glenn recommended the county, since it has not, pass a resolution making the entire length of the road 45 mph.
“The speed limit on it does good if people pay attention to it, but if they had time, they (Warren County Sheriff’s Department) could write some tickets and that could slow a few people down. I would recommend we make the complete length of Short Mountain Road all the way to the Cannon County line 45.”
Both recommendations were unanimously approved. The measures will be sent to the full Warren County Commission for consideration.
