Relay For Life is gearing up for an end-of-summer blowout, and there are some big changes afoot. For the first time, the action-packed annual fundraiser will be held at The Detention at The Elementary in Morrison on Aug. 24.
The free-to-the-public fundraising event for the American Cancer Society is certainly more than just a “relay race.” This might imply a sweaty competition between teams to pass on a baton and declare victory over the other team.
It’s actually more like a party where you get to meet with like-minded individuals in your community of all ages and physical abilities. The one thing attendees have in common is to share compassion while raising awareness and funds for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Carla Savage, longtime organizer of the event, says scheduling conflicts and weather concerns prompted the change in venue and date. Despite the changes, she and the committee are excited and hopeful these adjustments will be the shot in the arm the event needs to rekindle its past glory.
“Everyone we have talked with is excited, too,” said Savage. “In the past, it’s been outdoors. Now we don’t have to worry about the weather. It will be cool and dry on the inside.”
The event will include a host of activities and refreshments. Entertainment will be provided by Trent Kell and The Rally Roosters. A basketball game, a 5K night fun run and a live auction are all on the agenda.
Organizers still plan to hold the Survivor Walk and the Luminaria Ceremony outdoors.
“We hope anyone who would like to create a team, and all of our current teams, will come to the next team meeting June 20 at 5:30 p.m. at The Detention in Morrison,” urges Savage.
The event is free to attend. Funds are raised with the cost of food, games, auction items, luminaria memory purchases and a 5K entry fee. Team registrations also require a fee.
The Survivor Dinner is scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Westwood Church of Christ Annex starting at 6 p.m.
