Pet adoption day set for Saturday

If you’re looking to add a new cat or dog to your family, this Saturday is a great opportunity to find them because Warren County Animal Control and the new pet store Dragon Smart are teaming up to hold an adoption event.

As the shelter remains over capacity with cats and dogs in need of homes, this Saturday’s event is one of many the staff participate in as an effort to ease pressure on the facility. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., guests are invited to come out and meet several of the eligible dogs and cats at Dragon Smart, located at 2516 Smithville Highway across from Gateway Tire.

“I myself worked at an animal shelter and love the idea of babies getting another shot at life and finding good homes,” said pet store owner Alonna Geerts. “We wanted to pair up with a shelter to do an adoption event to spread the word about babies needing new homes.”

Geerts recently opened the business with husband Dylan. They pecialize in breeding bearded dragons, which are shipped all over the United States. Additionally, they carry many types of reptiles and small animals as well as the supplies and tank accessories needed to care for them at Dragon Smart.

“I am very passionate when it comes to animals and have experience with different kinds as well,” said Alonna. “I have always wanted to open up a pet store and offer proper care. I love working with exotics and all animals. My goal is to help animals thrive, not just survive.”

The pets adopted during the event will be released to their new homes after they have been spayed or neutered, and the adoption fees will be reduced for active duty military as well as veterans.

Dragon Smart is regularly open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday thru Saturday, and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
