A patient in the back of an ambulance was killed Thursday in Rock Island when the ambulance with its sirens activated was hit by a minivan.

Killed was Clifton Harville, 60, of Crossville.

Facing numerous charges for causing the wreck is Warren County resident Carol Simpson, 63.

Injured were ambulance occupants Ethan Dweese, 22, who was driving, and John Hurd, 41, who was in back with the patient.

The crash happened at the dangerous intersection in front of Dollar General, which is the intersection of Sparta Highway and Rock Island Road.

A minivan collided with the ambulance, causing it to roll. It was a White County ambulance heading toward McMinnville.

The three ambulance occupants suffered the most serious injuries. Simpson was driving the minivan and was being given a field sobriety test on the scene. She didn't appear to have suffered serious injury. A blood sample was taken and has been sent to the TBI.

That intersection has been the spot for several major wrecks in recent years. TDOT is in the process of placing a flashing light at the intersection, but it hasn't happened yet.
