A young woman is dead after lawmen opened fire on the car in which she was riding during a chase in neighboring Grundy County.
The woman, Shelby Comer, 20, was found dead inside the vehicle after the driver led lawmen on a high speed chase. Meanwhile, the driver, Jacky Wayne Bean, 32, of Soddy-Daisy is charged with attempted murder and evading arrest.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident happened late on the evening of Dec. 23 after a Grundy County deputy tried to stop a vehicle on B Mine Road in the Coalmont area.
“The driver reportedly pointed a firearm at the deputy, who then fired into the vehicle several times,” reads the preliminary report compiled by the TBI. “The vehicle, which was facing the deputy’s vehicle at the time of the shooting, sped away and sideswiped the deputy’s cruiser. Deputies attempted to pursue the vehicle, but quickly lost sight of it.”
About 20 minutes after the gunfire, a witness told lawmen he saw the suspect vehicle crash on B Mine Road.
“The male driver approached the citizen and said that he had been shot and needed help, asking for the citizen’s vehicle,” the preliminary report revealed. “The citizen drove off and contacted law enforcement. When officers arrived, the driver was not present. However, a female’s body was found inside the vehicle.”
Bean was captured by lawmen following a nine-hour manhunt and taken to the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound.
As to whether Comer’s death was due to the deputy’s gunfire remains under investigation. Comer was taken for autopsy to determine the cause of her death; however, the TBI has not revealed the findings of that autopsy. The identity of the deputy who fired the shots has not been released. Bean is being held without bond on charges of first-degree murder, evading arrest and DUI.
