One person was killed and two injured Wednesday afternoon when a motorist pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle at Rock Island in a near repeat of a crash at the hazardous intersection that claimed two lives earlier this year.
The fatally injured woman, Leoma Hoover, 85, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. She was the passenger in a 2007 Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Delores Sain, 85. She was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga with serious injuries.
According to Highway Patrolman Kyle Herren, Sain was traveling eastbound (away from McMinnville) on Sparta Highway when she slowed to turn onto Rock Island Road and pulled into the path of the oncoming westbound 2005 Jeep driven by Courtney Mabe, 19, of Quebeck. She was taken to St. Thomas River Park Hospital for treatment.
The vehicle was struck in the passenger-side by the Jeep, knocking it onto the shoulder while the Jeep came to rest in the road. The crash was similar to a wreck at the same intersection that claimed two lives in January. That wreck involved the same scenario where a motorist failed to yield and, on that occasion, pulled in front of a tractor trailer.
“It is identical to the semi crash, right over the marks where I’d worked it (in January),” Herren recalled.
The wreck marks the eighth fatality in Warren County this year, already making 2017 one of the deadliest years in recent history.
