Market on Main has been given the OK to return to historic downtown McMinnville on June 3 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vendor registration has begun.
McMinnville’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen has approved a request from Katie Kemezis and Christy Ross on behalf of Main Street McMinnville to use The Lot and close a portion of Court Square for the event. The measure passed unanimously.
Market on Main is a community event in its second year. It brings downtown streets to life with a giant yard and sidewalk sale. Visitors can find great deals and hidden treasures amid the dozens of booths and downtown merchants. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of people.
Prior to the vote, city administrator Bill Brock asked if the organization had contacted downtown business owners about the street closure.
“Have you spoken with business people downtown? This is a 7 a.m. closing on a Saturday,” said Brock.
Kemezis said, “I have not. From what I understand, they were comfortable with this last year. I can and bring this back to you at a later date.”
Alderman Kate Alsbrook stated the event, by the letter request presented by Main Street McMinnville, would only require the closing of the street adjacent to The Lot on South Court Square, while traffic down Main Street would be unhindered.
As an additional courtesy to downtown restaurants, the event prohibits the selling of food, drink or bake sale items from non-licensed Main Street McMinnville restaurants or any other group, including nonprofits and schools. Food sales are reserved for Main Street McMinnville restaurants only during the event.
It’s free for patrons, but there is a $5 registration fee and $5 space rental for vendors. Spaces are limited and assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis.
