Victoria Englands library at Warren County Jail has earned her the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, the Gold Award. She is pictured with her project advisor, Melonie Turner.

The cookie has crumbled the right way for Victoria England.
On Sunday, the WCHS senior was given the highest achievement in Girl Scouts, the Gold Award, during a ceremony at Lipscomb University.
England becomes the first girl in the 12-year history of McMinnville Troop 1142 to earn the Gold Award. Only about 5 percent of all Girl Scouts earn the honor, which is equivalent to the Eagle Scout in Boy Scouts.
England’s project was providing a children’s library at Warren County Jail. She got the idea from a conversation with Sheriff Jackie Matheny.
“He said a lot of children come in and out of the jail visiting a parent,” said England. “For some of them, they are here every week and they have nothing to do while they’re waiting. They just sit. I wanted to give them some books to read.”
The 18-month project began in November, 2014. After much planning, England took a bookcase, around 1,100 books, and a reading rug to the jail and placed it in the lobby in March, 2015. She said her goal was to continue adding to the library.
After speeches to local organizations such as Breakfast Rotary, Noon Exchange, and Evening Exchange, England’s book collection total continued to grow. She estimates she has received around 4,000 book donations to date.
England’s dedication makes her a community leader, according to Girls Scouts representative Shelia Majors.
“She exemplifies leadership in all its forms,” said Major. “She saw a need in her community and took action. Her extraordinary dedication, perseverance and leadership is making the world a better place.”
During Sunday’s award ceremony, it was said England has earned “a standard of excellence achieved by few” and that she has made “a lasting impact on the lives of others.”
Victoria is the daughter of Gary and Pam England. She plans to attend Motlow College this fall.
Melody Hyder is the troop leader of Girl Scout Troop 1142 and Melonie Turner has been her project advisor.
