City cancels youth basketball

McMinnville Parks and Recreation has cancelled its basketball league, but sign-ups have been extended through March 20 for city T-ball, baseball and softball. See story page 2B.

Delays in completing Milner Recreation Center have blocked an effort by McMinnville Parks and Recreation to offer youth basketball.

The league has been cancelled for the season. Refunds will be provided.

“As we all know, this past year has been trying for all of us as we navigate through times of uncertainty and many of our youth have been impacted,” said McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department director Scott McCord. “Many things that we take for granted have been affected, with youth sports being one of them.”

Milner Recreation Center has received about eight months worth of construction delays and the facility is not expected to be complete until the end of April or the beginning of May.

If needed in previous years, Bobby Ray Elementary and Hickory Creek Elementary were used for practices and games. However, due to the COVID pandemic, school officials don’t want the general public coming in and out of those gyms for rec league games.

“Many locations have restricted their facilities for use for their own patrons and this is very understandable,” said McCord. “With that said, our youth basketball league has seen ongoing delays due to the Milner Recreation Center not being opened. We now have further delays on the opening date and it is making it difficult to determine a starting point.”

Youth basketball normally begins in November and ends in mid-February or March. McCord says some families have already requested refunds.

“We have already seen the start of families asking for refunds because of conflicts,” said McCord. “With these delays we now run into the problem of three overlapping sports leagues and also summer time family activities. Many of our wonderful volunteers both coach and assist in all of three and can’t be in two places at the same time. This is not a decision we take lightly, but at this time we have decided to cancel youth basketball. We look forward to the 2021-22 youth basketball season in the newly renovated Milner Recreation Center.”

McMinnville Parks and Recreation Department will start providing refunds as soon as possible.
