Although the VFW Post 5064 building on Sparta Highway has closed, previous senior vice commander Mike Menth said the organization is still going strong.

“We want to make clear to the public the difference between the building and our charter,” said Menth. “Without the cost of the canteen hanging over head with its maintenance and management, we can grow and do more things for veterans and the community.”

After the VFW building was listed for sale for more than a year, Menth said participation had declined. The VFW Post 5064 charter has been around since 1946 for veterans to come together and share experiences. The VFW building was established in the early 1950s.

“It’s a sad thing and many locals feel an emotional connection to the VFW and association with our charter, but kids are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan and they are not interested in hanging out in canteens,” said Menth.

Added post adjutant Tom Davis, “High school scholarships and funds for schools, national children’s home, assistance with disability claims – these projects have fallen by the wayside because of the effort that has been put into keeping this canteen open.”

In 2014, a memorial featuring commemorative bricks with the names of veterans, date of service, and the logo of which branch of service, was placed in an area in front of the post. As to inquiries on the fate of the bricks, a final decision has yet to be made.

“We are considering relocating them to possibly Warren County Memorial Airport,” said VWF member John Davis. “If we don’t find a place, the families will get those.”

So where will Post 5064 members meet? According to John Davis, there are several options including Warren County Administrative Offices or Magness Library.

Still, many members expressed excitement for the future of the charter and are ready to move forward. Post 5064 plans to continue helping with numerous local projects including the Fishing Rodeo, Patriot Half Marathon, Honor Guard and Paddle Fest.
