Back-to-school events set for tax-free weekend

Preparing to return to school need not be a dull, grueling activity. Two fun-filled bashes are planned for Saturday, July 30 at Three Star Mall and in downtown McMinnville.

The Standard is organizing Marketville at the mall to coincide with tax-free weekend. Free school backpacks will be given away throughout the day, along with door prizes from vendors.

Marketville will also include a LifeFlight helicopter, bounce house and firetruck so there will be plenty to do for the kids. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Three Star Mall.

Over 30 vendor spots have already been reserved and just a few more are available by calling the Standard at 473-2191. A full-page ad promoting the event can be found on page 7B of today’s edition.

Main Street McMinnville is offering a festival called Back to School Downtown from 2 to 5 p.m. on July 30.

“Back to School Downtown is promoting shopping local for tax-free weekend and we encourage everyone to come downtown to shop special sales with the stores and special meal deals at the restaurants,” said Main Street McMinnville president Raven Young.

Free school supplies will be available, as well as bounce houses, balloon animals and several other vendors with free games for youngsters.

The downtown bash garnered support from McMinnville officials on Tuesday. Main Street McMinnville requested street closures for the event and that the Board of Mayor and Aldermen also waive fees associated with use of The Lot and a stage. Unanimous approval was given.
