A man who was caught stealing gas from a church van was given 90 days in jail. The man, Kerry Michael Jordan, entered a guilty plea before Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley to the charge of vandalism. He was directed to serve 90 days of a two-year sentence, make $936 restitution, and was warned to stay away from Morrison Church of Christ. The incident happened over the summer during the pre-dawn hours outside the church. He was caught by sheriff’s deputy Sgt. Mike Vann as the officer was conducting a building check around 3:30 a.m.“He walked from behind the building and I detected a strong odor of gasoline on his person,” Vann said, noting he soon found out the source of the gas smell. “The gas tank to the van was punctured and gas was leaking onto the ground.”The deputy found two plastic cans under the van which Jordan was apparently using to steal the gas. While the cost of the gas he was stealing was not a great amount, the damage Jordan caused to the gas tank by poking holes in it instead of using a hose to syphon out the gas was more than $500 and accounts for most of the restitution he will have to pay as part of his sentence.
