A man will serve 150 days in jail for assaulting a woman as she tried to get away from him.
The defendant, Jeffery Jones, 27, entered a guilty plea before Circuit Court Judge Bart Stanley to the charge of aggravated assault. He was directed to serve 150 days of a four-year sentence and warned to have no contact with the victim. He must also attend the batterer program.
The incident happened when a verbal argument between Jones and a female turned physical in front of neighbors. The victim said he was yelling and cussing at her so she tried to leave the area with neighbors. However, Jones reached out and grabbed the strap of her purse, breaking it, as she was walking toward a truck.
Jones continued his rage as she tried to leave. The victim said he jumped in the bed of the pickup and kept yelling, prompting them to stop the vehicle.
That’s when she went back inside the residence to get another purse and was attacked by Jones. Specifically, she said Jones grabbed her by the neck and choked her. The assault left red marks on her neck.
He was charged with the felony under a new state law that makes any choking or attempted strangulation of a victim aggravated assault. The crime carries three to six years in prison.
