Due to a soaring female inmate population, the women’s area of Warren County Jail has been expanded.Members of the Jail Oversight Committee toured the new women’s area Thursday morning that was constructed in response to 86 female inmates presently being held at the jail. When the new jail opened in 2005, there were about 15 female inmates, according to jail administrator Eddie Knowles. That number is now consistently higher, according to Sheriff Jackie Matheny.“We average 80 to 90 women, but when I first took office there were just two or three here,” said Matheny, who took office in 1994. “The female population has grown quite a bit in the last year, but then it’s grown everywhere.”Matheny listed numerous reasons for the surge in female inmates.
