Driver faces DUI charges

A woman has been charged with drunk driving after she struck another car Wednesday afternoon, causing her own vehicle to roll over on West Main Street near the downtown area.The woman, Shannon Nichole Evans, 37, has been charged with driving under the influence after she failed a field sobriety test and admitted taking medication including Percaset, Soma and Xanax a few hours before the crash.The wreck happened around 5 p.m. on West Main Street near its intersection with West End Avenue, which is not far from Hardee’s. According to preliminary reports, Evans was heading east toward town in a 1995 Chevy Suburban when her vehicle went across the yellow line into the turn lane which separates the east- and west-bound lanes.She then collided with a 2007 Lincoln driven by Bettye Wooden, 64, her vehicle slamming into a brick wall just off the sidewalk after impact with the SUV. Wooden was taken to River Park for treatment of noncritical injuries. Meanwhile Evans’ SUV rolled over, landing on its side in the eastbound lane.Traffic was detoured while the wreck was cleaned up and investigated.
