A local man suffered critical injuries Saturday evening when his truck flipped on Highway 55, sliding on its side for more than a football field, before flipping back onto its wheels.
The driver, Javier Ortiz Contreras, was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga by LifeForce helicopter where he is under treatment for serious arm injuries sustained in the crash.
According to police investigation findings at the wreck scene, Ortiz was heading away from McMinnville, on Highway 55 near its intersection with Old Shelbyville Road, when he lost control of his vehicle. His 2002 Nissan truck then began swerving across the road until it tipped over onto the passenger side. The truck then slid about 150 yards on its side until it struck a ridge in the blacktop, snapping it back upright and onto its four wheels.
There were apparently no witnesses to the accident which happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The truck, which came to rest in the middle of the bypass, caused a major snarl in traffic, backing up motorists a mile from the wreck scene.
