Deadly crash caused by vehicle crossing center line on Old Shelbyville Road

Two people were killed and seven others injured Monday when two cars collided head-on at the crest of a hill on Old Shelbyville Road.Pronounced dead at the scene were Derrick Reeder, 31, and Brittany Fitts, 24, both of DeKalb County and both of whom were occupants of Reeder’s 1997 Acura. Injured in Reeder’s vehicle were Kara Funk, 24, and Brandon Byford, 22, both of DeKalb County, along with an 11-year-old girl from Gordonsville.Also injured in the crash were all the occupants of the other vehicle, including its driver, Tammy Edwards, 24, of Woodbury and three children ages 5, 4 and 2.The victims were airlifted from the scene to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville with the exception of one victim who was transported by ambulance to River Park Hospital because she is six-months pregnant and did not want to go by air.According to preliminary reports, the accident happened just after 1 p.m. Monday as Edwards was heading eastbound, toward McMinnville, in her 1995 Ford Mustang on Old Shelbyville Road. The investigation shows Edwards strayed over the center line near the crest of a hill prompting Reeder to hit his brakes and begin sliding when he saw the vehicle in his lane of traffic.
