County seeking storage

Warren County officials are hunting storage space to house surplus items for its government departments and local schools. The cost will be split between the county and school system.
Red Road Business Park has up to 10,000 square feet available in 1,120-square-foot units, also called squares. The month-by-month rental agreement would be $100 per unit, per month.
“We just have to pay for what we use,” said Dennis Baird of the Warren County Financial Management Department. “If we start next week and use two squares, that’s $200. If we use 10 squares, that’s $1,000. Next month, if we drop back down to using one square, it’s $100. It’s a month-to-month agreement without deposit.”
The measure was brought before Financial Management Committee members Terry Bell,  Billy Earl Jones and Herschel Wells for their consideration.
Warren County Executive John Pelham says they have been trying to find a location to keep surplus items in county government and the school system.
“We really have a need for somewhere to store all the surplus property so we can list it on govdeals,” said Pelham. “We can start moving some of these things. We have copiers and printers in hallways and in stairwells. I know the school system has things scattered all over.”
Wells asked if inquiries were made at the old Carrier building.
“No, I didn’t,” said Pelham.
The county sells surplus items on govdeals.com. As part of that agreement, individuals have the right to look at items before they bid on them.
Pelham says he did make other inquiries, but he was attempting to find space that was centrally located when inspection requests are received.
“We did contacted Amie Hodges at Pioneer Building Supply about the Powermatic building,” Pelham said. “We were trying to get something more centrally located in town. We could check with them.”
The measure will be brought back up for consideration after Carrier building officials have been contacted.
