City supports tighter ephedrine regulations

McMinnville officials passed a resolution Tuesday night requesting action from the state to regulate the sale of ephedrine or pseudoephedrine products by requiring a prescription for them.“I think we all understand the problems that methamphetamine has caused in our county and across the state for the last several years,” said McMinnville Police Chief Bryan Denton.Methamphetamine, also called meth, is a powerfully addictive and illegal stimulant. The main ingredient to make meth is ephedrine or pseudoephedrine cold medication that can be purchased from pharmacies without a prescription. Without ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, meth cannot be made.Denton asked members of the city’s Finance Committee to pass the resolution in a show of support for a push by TBI director Mark Gwyn, who wants state lawmakers to ignore the financially motivated desires of pharmaceutical companies and make such cold medicine available by prescription only.“This is the only thing we know that has worked in any other states,” said Gwyn.
