Alderman Smith wants to start process

The city of McMinnville could hire from within for its next fire chief.
Mayor Jimmy Haley, who is interim city administrator, says he and McMinnville Police Chief Bryan Denton, who is interim fire chief, have been looking within the department for someone to step up and take over.
“I have been working on this,” said Haley. “I’ve been looking at this with Bryan and looking at promotions within the department itself. We have been trying to get a little bit more responsibility and duty within the fire department with some of the guys to see if they have the ability to assume the position. We would like to hire internally.”
The disclosure came during Tuesday night’s Safety Committee meeting after a second push was made by Alderman Ken Smith to begin the hiring process.
“I would like to make a motion that this committee instruct the acting administrator to post the position of fire chief for the city of McMinnville on or before Friday, June 6,” said Smith.
Officials have also discussed the need to restart the process of hiring a new city administrator with Alderman Mike Neal saying, “We need to get on the J.O.B.” The city has been without a fire chief since the end of March and without a city administrator since the end of August 2013.
“I’ve already been asked by people around here when the fire chief job will be open because they may want to apply,” said Smith of the fire chief position.
Haley presented the committee with the job description used when fire chief was posted in the past, as well as a list of newspapers and online publications where the position was posted.
Despite Haley’s statements he is looking within the fire department, Safety Committee members Neal and Smith voted unanimously on the motion to direct him to begin the hiring process.
The motion will be sent to the full board for it’s consideration on June 10 at 7 p.m.
Haley can still hire from within the fire department. While the city administrator works at the direction of the board, the city’s municipal code gives the administrator the authority on whom to hire.
