A driver was killed while his passenger escaped serious injury Sunday afternoon when their vehicle crashed and overturned on Lawson Mill Road near Flat Rock.

The fatally injured victim, James G. Cantrell, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was partially ejected from the rolling wreckage. His passenger, Mattie Smith, 26, suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Highway Patrol investigators say the difference between the two was Smith was wearing her seatbelt, while Cantrell was not. The seatbelt kept the passenger in the vehicle as it overturned.

A preliminary investigation of the deadly wreck revealed Cantrell was heading eastbound in a 1996 Nissan pickup on Lawson Mill Road late Sunday afternoon when he lost control of the vehicle.

The pickup left the road and struck an embankment before slamming into a stand of small trees. The pickup then overturned, throwing the driver out and causing the fatal injuries.
