BJ's Discount on N. Chancery Street was seized Monday morning by the state.
A local market was shut down by the state Monday morning for nonpayment of Tennessee state taxes.According to a sign posted on the door, BJ’s Discount was closed due to a Tennessee government seizure ordered by the Department of Revenue, Tax Enforcement Division. According to the sign, “All persons are warned not to remove or tamper with this property in any manner.”Store owner Betty Perry said the closure is the result of a two-year disagreement with the state over sales tax collections on cigarettes. She said her lawyers had been working on a settlement with the state and Monday’s closure comes as a shock.“We don’t understand why they came in and did this,” said Perry.
