It’s not often that a stationary car becomes involved in an accident, but such is the case for a bicycle crash that occurred Friday on Manchester Highway.

According to witness reports gathered from Police Sgt. Justin Shrum, McMinnville cyclist Neal Smith, 47, was riding his bike along the shoulder of the road going full speed when he hit a parked Pontiac Aztek.

“They said he had his head down and they saw him hit the rear of this vehicle, fly up in the air and land through its back glass while his bike landed in the grass over there,” described Shrum. “This car was parked on the shoulder of the road with no one in it.”

After landing through the back windshield, Smith was able to call his wife from inside the vehicle and tell her about the accident. According to Shrum, Smith’s injuries are non-life-threatening.

There are no charges at this time.
