Boyd Christian ran into a buzz saw of a West Elementary team Monday night in 5-6 grade elementary basketball.
West had too much quickness and firepower for Boyd to keep pace. West ran away with a 42-4 victory in a game played at Bobby Ray Elementary due to construction at West.
West used its guard play to control the game. Trey Marten and Levi Scott led the way with a game-high 12 points apiece. They both gave Boyd nightmares with their ability to pressure the ball, come up with steals, and score in transition.
Marten and Scott scored all 12 points in the opening quarter for West as the Wizards raced out to a 12-2 lead. Alton Womack scored the basket for Boyd.
Any hopes of a Boyd comeback were thwarted in the second quarter when the Broncos were held scoreless. The fierce West defense prevented Boyd from getting quality looks at the basket. When the Broncos were able to work the ball inside, they were unable to convert.
West began to pull away as Marek Sadlon got in on the scoring when he ran the floor, caught a long pass from Scott, and dribbled in for a fast-break layup.
It was 22-2 at the half.
Justin Spry made a 10-foot baseline jumper in the third quarter to give Boyd its only points of the second half. Other than that, it was all West.
The Wizards began to work the ball into the post and Timothy Blakeley responded with six points in the second half. There wasn’t much Boyd could do to mount a comeback against a well-rounded West squad.
