Westwood sweeps Boyd

With a pair of wins Thursday, Manchester Westwood will sweep the 7-8 grade Warren County elementary regular season championships.

The Rockets and Lady Rockets took their latest steps toward championships Monday, sweeping Boyd at home. The Rockets beat Boyd 37-12, while the Lady Rockets stayed unbeaten with a 44-0 victory over the Lady Broncos.

Manchester Westwood (10-1) will meet Centertown Thursday with the regular season title, along with the No. 1 seed in next week’s elementary tournament, on the line. The Warriors are also 10-1 after Monday’s win over Morrison.

The Rockets didn’t waste long taking care of Boyd, which finished the regular season 0-12. Manchester Westwood opened the game on a 15-0 run and led 27-2 by halftime.

Jayden Carter, the league’s leading scorer, finished with 14 points – all coming in the first half. Caiden Warren added nine, followed by Matt Moore with four. Blake Cummins, Blake Hillis, Jaiden Warren, Brayden Trail and Stevie Boles scored two points each for the Rockets.

Sam Page led Boyd with six points. Jordan Perry and Abe Rogers scored four and two points, respectively.

Monday’s shutout loss was the third for the Lady Broncos, also 0-12 in the regular season, this year. It was the first in nine games though after Boyd was held scoreless in two of its first three games.

The Lady Rockets were led by Princess Penaloza with six points. The Manchester Westwood girls will enter Thursday’s matchup at Centertown with a perfect 11-0 record, while the Lady Warriors are 10-1. Manchester Westwood won the previous meeting 30-22 Dec. 2.

Tip-off Thursday is scheduled for 6 p.m.
