The WCMS basketball teams aren’t ready to quit playing yet.
Both the Lady Pioneers and Pioneers made sure their seasons would last at least one more week with opening-round wins in the Area 6 tournament in Coffee County. The Warren County girls squeaked by Shelbyville Harris 35-31, while the Pioneers pounded Harris 68-15.
Self-preservation was a powerful motivator when the Lady Pioneers took the court Tuesday. Coach Tara Koran and her team weren’t ready to see a splendid run end. Paige Sweeton made sure it wouldn’t.
Sweeton sank four 3-pointers, three coming in the second half, to help hold off Harris. Shelbyville did its best to limit Sable Winfree, Warren County’s top scorer, but they couldn’t keep track of the smooth-shooting guard.
Sweeton drained two triples coming out of the break, helping build on the team’s 20-14 halftime lead. She added the dagger late in the fourth, giving her a team-high 15 points.
Winfree finished with six, followed by Lex Verge and Bella Pennington with four points apiece. Hailey Simpson and Aleah Davis scored three points each.
The Lady Pioneers advanced to play CTC champion White County in the semifinals Thursday night. Results were unavailable at press time.
The Pioneers didn’t have to sweat it out against Shelbyville. Warren County completely dominated its CTC rival.
Isaiah Cummings led the way with 12 points, followed by Alex van Vuuren and Dylan Stepp with 11 points each and Dyson Elam with 10. Rounding out the scoring were Treyton Terry with eight, Aaron Templeton with seven, Baylor Melton with four, Brett Cantrell with three and Easton West with two.
The boys will play in the Area 6 semifinals Friday at 7 p.m. against Whitthorne Middle School from Columbia.
The substate tournament will be held next week at Stewart’s Creek in Murfreesboro.
