WCMS soccer shuts out Harris
Katie Toney continues the forward progress of the ball for the Lady Pioneer soccer team. WCMS varsity soccer has scored a total of 34 goals in five games this season.

WCMS soccer took its high-octane offense to Shelbyville on Tuesday and put it to the test against perennial conference powerhouse, the Harris Middle School Lady Golden Eagles, a conference finalist over the past three seasons.
The Lady Pioneer offense started off fast and raced away to the finish line with a 5-0 victory.
WCMS coach Matt Walker said, “I must once again brag on the defense as they played a very good Harris team and held them to three shots on goal and recorded their fifth shutout in six games. It was important for us to start fast and send a message early. Harris is always a tough place to play and I knew we needed to score early to prevent them from getting any momentum.”
Action began and true to its billing the Lady Golden Eagles possessed the ball well and had a very fast offense. The Lady Pioneers boast speed of their own and were tested early as Harris made several long passes over the Lady Pioneer defense looking for a quick strike.
Time after time, the WCMS defense held strong until the offense could get its game into gear. Katie Toney drove into the heart of the Golden Eagle defenders and was tripped inside the box. Makenna Mason stepped in to take the penalty shot and she blasted it past the Harris goal keeper for a 1-0 WCMS advantage.
After the early goal by the Lady Pioneers, the momentum shifted and WCMS kept the ball on Harris’ side of the field for the remainder of the half. Mason scored her second goal of the evening off a pass from Emory Anish to give WCMS a 2-0 advantage as the two teams headed into intermission.
The WCMS defense only allowed a single shot on goal in the entire first 20 minutes of play. Coach Walker challenged the offense to pick up where it left off, utilizing its speed to get some easy looks and secure the victory.
The Lady Pioneers hit the field running and just a couple minutes into the second half Mason found Samantha Ramsey on the far post and she booted a quick shot that found the back of the net for a quick goal and a decisive 3-0 advantage.
WCMS looked to seal the deal and shifted to a defensive mindset until the final 10 minutes when Harris started to fatigue. The Lady Pioneers shifted back to offensive mode and quickly got a fourth goal when Ramsey played a ball through to Toney for a goal.
Just moments later, Savannah Cox took a ball to the corner and played a perfect pass across to find Ramsey for her second goal and a huge 5-0 lead. WCMS ran out the clock and the victory was complete.
Coach Walker added, “The midfield and strikers played together great tonight.  We passed the ball as good as we have all season and the result showed on the scoreboard.  We controlled the ball for a majority of the game. We are continuing to improve as a team which is exactly what you want as a coach. We do not want to peak too soon and we keep correcting little mistakes which will be key for us in the tournament.”
WCMS will celebrate eighth grade night on its final home game of the 2015 season on Sept. 17 versus Algood with game time set for 5:30 p.m.
