The WCMS Lady Pioneers opened their season Monday night at Charlie Dalton Gym against White County.
It was the debut for Mendy Stotts as the middle school coach. The Lady Pioneers played aggressively the entire game and lost by only three points, 39-36.
The Lady Pioneers trailed at halftime, 17-15, in a very competitive game. The girls battled and took the lead, 30-29, with 4:14 to go in the fourth quarter. The score was tied 34-34 with only :56 seconds left.
It was a very physical game and Warren County missed 19 free throws. Eight free throws were missed in the fourth quarter alone.
During the year of COVID-19, teams have not had the opportunity to practice as normal in the summer, and there were no scrimmages prior to the season. Nevertheless, the Lady Pioneers appeared to be well-disciplined and prepared. Most importantly, the Lady Pioneers had the opportunity to win late in the game.
Top scorer for Warren County was Regin Grissom with 10 points. After the game, coach Stotts said, “They played their hearts out. It is tough at the end when you lose like that, but I am really proud of my girls and the way they played.”
The Lady Pioneers next game is on the road Thursday night against Tullahoma West.
