A late goal allowed the Warren County Middle School girls soccer team to salvage a 1-1 tie Monday night in Tullahoma.
The Lady Pioneers scored with about 10 minutes to play when Madison Merriman made a pass to Abby Roller who blasted the ball to the back of the net.
“It was a great shot and Abby got hit after she kicked it,” said WCMS coach Matt Walker. “The goalie was charging out and the defense was converging and she came through.”
Walker said Tullahoma got an early penalty kick to go up 1-0.
“They were awarded a penalty kick but after that we dominated the game,” said Walker. “It was one of those things where we took a lot more shots than they did, but we just couldn’t score.”
The tie leaves WCMS with a 6-1-1 overall record and a 3-1-1 record in conference play. Walker said the Lady Pioneers are still struggling to rebound from their first loss of the year last week.
“We’re having trouble recovering from our first conference loss in two years,” said Walker. “We’re not playing nearly as good now as we were before the loss. We need to get some of our swagger back.”
Walker said the team is working to overcome injuries as key players have been lost from both the varsity and junior varsity teams.
The Lady Pioneers returned to action last night with a road game in Sparta. Details were not available at press time.
