Warren County Middle School had a rough go Thursday night versus Harris Middle School from Shelbyville. In the first meeting between these two teams in Shelbyville, WCMS let a lead slip away late in the game to give Harris the win. Thursday night, the Eagles would fly away with a win in McMinnville by a final score of 41-29.
Thursday night saw a very aggressive and physical Eagle team. WCMS would fend off the Eagle attack through the first half, but would lose two of its key players to injury. Ben Clark and Jamison Holt, both from the Pioneers, would leave the game and not be able to return.
Sloan Seymour would carry the load for WCMS scoring a team-high 10 points.
Heading into halftime, with the score locked at 20 and down two key players, WCMS would have to have some of the younger guys step up. Defense would have to make plays and ground the Eagle offense, while the Pioneers would really have to get the offense going in the remaining two quarters.
The Eagle offense in the third quarter would be more than the Pioneers could withstand outscoring the Pioneers 13-1 out of the half. Isaiah Rutledge for WCMS would be the only Pioneer to put a point on the board.
The Eagles were spreading the floor and passing the ball quickly around the perimeter for much of the quarter. There was some miscommunication in the Pioneer defense allowing the Eagles to put up points inside, as well as from behind the 3-point line.
Crockett Walker and Seymour would get WCMS back on track in the fourth quarter scoring and quickly answering the Eagle offense shot for shot. But the damage was clearly done to the Pioneers in the third quarter when the defense closed off all paths to the basket.
The Pioneers would matchup with the Eagles the entire first half shot for shot. The defense for both teams was relentless in their pursuit of the ball.
Seymour would put up seven of his 10 points in the first half, and get help from Micah Webster with four.
