The WCMS Pioneers have been bigger, stronger and faster than their CTC opponents all season. On Thursday night, they made sure everybody knew they were the best team in the conference too.
Warren County completed a perfect regular season in the Central Tennessee Conference, beating Franklin North 58-26 on eighth grade night. It finished off a 12-0 run through the CTC and improved to the Pioneers to 15-3 overall.
The Pioneers went into Thursday's game knowing they already had clinched the No. 1 seed in this week's CTC tourney, but achieving perfection was the goal when the spectacular squad stepped on the court. Warren County buried the Gators behind an avalanche of 3-pointers in the second quarter, two coming from Malachi Wilcher and a third swished by Montaviaus Montero.
Leading 28-8 at halftime, Warren County wasn't going to let off the pedal when play resumed. Josh Powell took control of the offense in the third quarter, scoring eight of his team's 12 points to push the Pioneers to a 40-20 advantage going into the fourth.
Big man Tylan Adams did most of the damage late, scoring six points in the final quarter. Wilcher also had six points late, securing a season-high 14 points in the victory.
Pioneer fans started the game getting to cheer injured eighth grader Luke Simpson as he made a short-lived return to the hardwood.
Simpson, who tore his ACL during the season, started and wasn't defended on a pair of long 3-pointers to start the game, but shooting off one leg hindered the team's leading scorer from knocking one down. Warren County quickly fouled on the inbound and Simpson left the game to a big round of applause.
With the win, Warren County received a bye in the opening round of the CTC tourney, which will start Monday and be played at Tullahoma High School. The Pioneers await the winner of Franklin South and Tullahoma West Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Should games be canceled early this week due to weather, the CTC tournament will be cancelled and the Pioneers will advance to next week's Area 6 tourney.
