Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneer basketball players will finally get to dribble and shoot. They just have to stay six feet apart.
Mendy Stotts has announced her first basketball clinic and tryout since being named the WCMS 7-8 grade girls coach last month. The clinic will be held June 1-3 with the tryout scheduled for June 4 at WCMS gym.
“We’re all itching to get out there,” said Stotts. “It’s going to be a challenge for sure. I’m going to have cones set up to keep the girls separated and they’re all going to have their own ball. It will mainly be shooting and fundamental drills. You can’t guard and you can’t play a game.”
The free clinic is being offered to girls who will be entering grades 7-8 in the WCMS school zone. Only eight girls can enter the gym at once with four morning sign-up times available each day.
“We’ll work for 45 minutes and then I’ll have a 15-minute break to clean,” said Stotts. “On the day for conditioning, we’ll probably go outside and work on the track.”
Day 1 will emphasize defense and rebounding. Day 2 will stress shooting and dribbling. Day 3 is for conditioning, and Day 4 is the actual tryout.
“If they come all three days and for the tryout, I’ll have a pretty good idea about what they can do,” said Stotts.
Girls don’t have to register for the same time slot each day. All that’s needed is proper workout attire.
To register, call or text Stotts at (931) 279-1371 or email email@example.com. She said time slots are filling up fast.
Open gym times have also been announced for all rising WCMS sixth-graders interested in playing basketball. Coach Leanne Morrison says the dates will be June 9, 11, 16 and 18 with sign-up times at 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. each day.
Coach Morrison says official tryouts will be held in August. Call or text coach Morrison at 273-4187 to reserve an open gym spot. Only nine players will be permitted in the gym at a time.
