Covenant Academy hosted the Warren County volleyball team for a rematch on Tuesday night.

The Lady Lions of Covenant Academy were hoping to win at least one set in the match against their larger, crosstown rival. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, the Lady Pioneers were hot off their Monday night victory at Shelbyville and won all sets.

The Lady Pioneers won the varsity match in three straight sets. Covenant Academy was missing a couple of girls due to sickness (not COVID-19), which hurt the Lady Lions.

The Lady Pioneers took off to a commanding lead in the first set and coach Chris Madewell of the Lady Lions called timeout. The Lady Lions calmed down and came back strong in the second set.

Warren County’s Bella Cantrell had a streak of strong serves in the third set that helped secure final-set victory for the Lady Pioneers.

After the match, both coaches had positive comments about their respective teams. Coach Erin Blalock of the Lady Pioneers said, “The girls came out and played well tonight. They needed that. They had a good win last night and they wanted to keep the momentum going. They did a lot of good things.”

Covenant Academy coach Madewell said, “The first set was not that good and you could see them put their heads down. They came back and played some really good volleyball. They were all over the court. They were consistent during the last two sets. We have to play hard and hit the ball hard against a team like that. We call it ‘mo.’ When you have the momentum, you see what happens. I was proud of our big girls. We had some good blocks in the middle.”

Covenant Academy is home again Friday against RHCA at 5 p.m. Warren County volleyball was home Thursday night against Coffee County. Follow the Southern Standard @sstandardnews on Twitter for updates on scores. You can reach sports via email at sports@southernstandard.com.
